Week 4 Discussion
Situation No. 1
John is an active member of school organizations. He has a lot of talents to share and ideas to contribute to their club. Aside from that, he is known for his good looks, neatness, and tidiness. However, these seemingly likeable characteristics became the very reasons for rumors and gossips-- that he is a member of the LGBTQ+I community. This hurt him so much that he almost wanted to drop from schooling.
I will be sad knowing this. Up to this day, gender stereotypes still exist. Not because John looks good, clean and tidy, he's already a member of LGBTQ+I community. John can express himself in any way he desires, and people that are jumping into conclusions without knowing the truth are very upsetting. John can be neat and tidy without being judged. So I will tell those people that jumping into conclusions won't do any good. On the other hand, I will tell John that he doesn't need to be discouraged, being assumed as a part of LGBTQ+I wouldn't make him less. After all, LGBTQ+I is one of the community that we should admire and put respect to.
Situation No. 2
Erica is a Grade 11 student. Although she is quite plump, she is undeniably pretty. Since she is sociable, she became popular and gained a lot of friends in school. She is just an average student but having a crush on her Top one classmate urged her to spend late nights studying to keep up with him. However, all her efforts still fell short and she did not make it to the cut of students with honors. Because of this, she developed an eating disorder that caused her to lose huge weight. She also started to have breakouts. With these, the then friendly Erica became aloof and self-conscious
It is very sad to hear. Erika experienced an extreme weight loss because she is disappointed by herself. I know that it is really hard for her to accept that she failed in the process of achieving her goal. I will talk to Erika and say that it is not the end. She can try and try to achieve the goal she's working for. There is always hope, I will tell ger that she can stand again and do better.
Processing Questions:
1. What kind of adolescent did the two students portray in the two situations?
2. What challenges did John and Erica experience?
3. What challenges do Filipino adolescents face most?
Erica and John are a pair of beautiful and remarkable students. In their adolescence, they experienced loss of self-esteem which can happen in everyone's adolescence period
Erica suffered from an alarming eating disorder because she failed to reach her goal. While John lost his self confidence because of people judging and assuming that he's part of the LGBTQ+I community.
Adolescents tend to lose their self-esteem because of those toxic people believing in toxic perceptions or ideologies. People judge and dictate adolescents to act in a way them people want. Because of this, adolescents are unable to express their true identity, their true selves, because of the pressure that's being given to them by their peers, families, or anyone toxic around them.
